Does the thought of moving stress you out? Here are a few tips from our partner La Capitale’s blog to make your move go more smoothly and make sure you’re covered in case you run into any problems.

1. Make sure you’re adequately covered when your property is being transported

To reduce the likelihood of problems while your property is being moved from one residence to another, the key is to plan ahead and be well-informed!

  • Hiring a moving company

Hire a company that holds insurance coverage to cover your property during the move. To make sure the coverage is valid, ask for the insurer’s name and policy number.

  • Renting a moving truck

In order to cover your property while it’s being transported, the home insurance from the residence you’re vacating must still be in force.

To find out whether you’d be covered if you caused damage to the rented vehicle, check with your auto insurer. You should know that you may have to pay an extra fee for insurance provided by the rental company, even if you have the Q.E.F. No. 27 endorsement for damage to vehicles you don’t own. Utility vehicles are not usually eligible for this coverage.

  • Borrowed trailers or pick-up trucks

In order to cover your property while it’s being transported, the home insurance from the residence you’re vacating must still be in force.

To find out whether you’d be covered if you caused damage to the borrowed vehicle or trailer, call your insurer.  In cases involving trailers, the insurer will confirm whether it will provide coverage based on the trailer’s category. With borrowed trailers, verify whether you have the Q.E.F. No. 27 endorsement for damage to vehicles you don’t own.

2. Before you terminate your current home insurance, make sure all your property has been moved and the civil liability for the insured premises is transferred to the new owners.

Your property will therefore be covered by your insurance for 30 days, whether it’s still in your old home or you’re in the process of moving to your new home.

Furthermore, if you move before your lease expires or your property is sold, you should maintain your insurance coverage. Inform your insurer of your lease end date or the date on which the deed of sale will be signed. Also notify them of the date on which the premises will be vacated.

Why? Because you can be held liable if you cause unintentional bodily injury to a third party or property damage, even in your absence. Here are a couple of examples. A faucet leaks after you leave the home and causes damage to the television of the person who lives in the unit below yours or a visitor slips and falls on your icy entrance. In such cases, maintaining your home insurance can save you from paying out significant sums of money. Important! Certain coverages do not apply when the insured premises is not occupied. Check with your insurer to avoid any surprises!

3. Start your new home’s insurance coverage at the same time as the start date of your lease or the date on which you take possession of your home

Be prepared and start insurance shopping for your new home as soon as you know this date. Your coverage will then kick in as soon as you take possession of your new home. Remember to provide your new address to your auto insurance representative.

4. If you store your property, make sure it’s covered

Your home insurance may automatically cover your stored property, whether you store it at a friend’s home or in a residential storage facility. Contact your insurer to check if this applies to you. If this property isn’t covered, you can discuss options that are available to you with your insurer!
